Business Information

Dr. Alfredo Balarezo, M.D. has been trained in one of the nation’s leading neurosurgical programs and has a vast experience in both routine and complex neurosurgical problems. Neurological Associates offers conservative and surgical treatment of all spinal disorders, herniated discs and spinal stenosis. We also provide evaluation and treatment of brain and neurological disorders conditions such as brain tumors, blood vessel abnormalities, spinal cord abnormalities and fluid retention in the brain (hydrocephalus). Many of these conditions are often treated in collaboration with other specialists.

Depending on the diagnosis, we perform minimally invasive surgical procedures such as: • Microscopic Endoscopic Surgery – Performed on the lumbar and cervical spines and replaces the traditional large surgical incisions, using a very small keyhole endoscopic entry for surgical tools. • Percutaneous Nucleoplasty - For moderate disc protrusions. Using x-ray guidance. This is an out-patient procedure which eliminates general anesthesia and involves doing a needle puncture rather than a surgical incision. For additional information on this procedure go to www.discnucleoplasty.com. The use of microscopes and video with the advantages of less trauma, less tissue scarring, minimal blood loss, less post-operative pain and faster recovery. • X-Stop Insertion or Interspinous Decompression – For moderate cases of lumbar spinal stenosis. This is an out-patient procedure and carries a very minimal or no risk of damage to the intraspinal structures such as nerves or spinal cord which can occur in major open procedures. • Kyphoplasty – This is a percutaneous procedure treating fractures caused by osteoporosis or cancer of the spine. Balloons are used to restore the anatomy and cement is delivered to stabilize the spine. This procedure takes a few hours and can be performed under general or local anesthesia. There are many favorable results from Kyphoplasty which include significant reduction in pain; improved ability to perform everyday activities; and it carries a low complication rate. • Peripheral Nerve Problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome Neurological Associates offers Second Surgical Opinions, that is, if surgery has been recommended we gladly provide a second neurosurgical opinion to inform you of the best treatment options available for your individual case.
