JVS is a nonprofit and nonsectarian agency founded in Detroit in 1941. It began with one staff member. Today, the agency employs more than 300 people at its six offices in metropolitan Detroit.

Throughout its history, the JVS has helped thousands of people meet life challenges that have affected their self-sufficiency. It is an organization with a rich heritage and remains steadfast in its commitment to helping people realize their potential and live their life with dignity.

The agency first began as a women’s employment bureau and soon expanded to helped "hard to place" job applicants, including people with disabilities and holocaust survivors. After World War II, JVS placed discharged and disabled soldiers in employment and refugees fleeing Europe were assisted.

Throughout its history, JVS has adapted its services to meet the changing needs of our community. Today, the agency provides career development and employment services; programs for at-risk youth; adult day care for individuals with memory loss; programs for active seniors; initiatives to help individuals with disabilities become self-sufficient; financial literacy and homebuyer education classes; services for the homeless and other essential human services.
